1952
, in post-war Japan,
Yoshihara Jir

formed the Gutai Group, which at first consisted of about fifteen members.

1954- First Gutai Journal is published, showcasing the group's work.
1955- Tanaka Atsuko and Murakami Saburo join Gutai.
1955- First Gutai Exhibition in Ohara Hall, Tokyo, where many of the group's most famous artworks first appeared.
1956- The Outdoor Gutai Art exhibition encourages viewers to interact with the art.
1960- Gutai members help prepare The International Sky Festival, which exhibits reproduced sketches flying in the sky.
1962- The Gutai group's home base and gallery, The Gutai Pinacotheca, opens in Osaka.
1965- The Gutai Group is invited to the Nul 1965 exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, where they recreated many famous works.
1970- The Gutai Art Festival at Expo ’70’s Festival Plaza in Osaka, the Gutai Group's last collaborative exhibition.
1972- Yoshihara Jirō dies suddenly. The Gutai Group disbands, though most of the members continue to be active in the art world.
1979- Former Gutai members hold exhibition called "Jirō Yoshihara and Today's Aspects of Gutai" to showcase new art and remember him.
2013- The Solomon Guggenheim Museum holds "Gutai: Splendid Playground" to celebrate the group's work.
